So a second regatta this year for the SYC Devon Racing Team. This time the event was Fowey Race Week rather than the sunny waters of southern Turkey.James Bowman, Michael Bagge and Keith Wheatley entered Keith’s boat Sanika, a 31-year-old Contessa 27, in one of Cornwall’s most popular regattas. The forecast was for strong easterlies, less than perfect for the 22-mile passage race from Falmouth to Fowey on the first day. The Met Office did not lie. It was brutal, with constant upwind sailing and big seas off the legendary Dodman Point.

“It took five hours and we were soaked, bruised and tired but managed to come in fourth in class,” said Keith. “Sanika is not that quick but a long race and a generous handicap worked in our favour.”

The next day saw two short inshore races and a first and fourth for SYC. Plus the sun shone beautifully. Wednesday was grey and rough, with the wind down to about 14kn. “We slipped down the table from that point and couldn’t race on Thursday because the forecast gales mean we had to use a brief weather window to get Sanika back to her mooring near St Mawes. Jonathan & Tom Carr were disappointed not to be racing on Thursday but kindly came aboard for the delivery trip home. A gentle SW breeze, sunshine, pasties and the occasional dolphin made it a calm and enjoyable end to the week.
