Training at Starcross Yacht Club
At SYC our aim is to help you get the most fun and enjoyment from your dinghy, multihull and yacht sailing whether your interests are racing, cruising or just pottering about in the Exe estuary.
We offer a range of formal and informal training opportunities throughout the year whether you are new to sailing or more experienced. As an RYA Training Centre we can also offer RYA certificates and qualifications for those who want them. We also offer training for members who want to use a kayak or canoe safely on the estuary when not sailing.
As a club we always aim to offer our training at a reasonable cost to our members. Our RYA courses are also available to non-members for an additional temporary membership fee.
You can find full information on all our current training and courses and how to book by clicking the links below:
Some courses are organised when there’s enough demand from members. Please contact the SYC Training Officer if you’d like to do a course not listed in the current training calendar. Click the link below to see a full list of what we can usually offer:
Our training calendar is updated throughout the year. We also tell members about new training opportunities published in the training calendar through various club communications and on posters in the clubhouse and Members’ Room.
Our training and courses are suitable for complete beginners through to more experienced sailors.
You can check the suitability of specific training and courses for your needs by clicking on the course title in the training calendar or in the full list of courses we can offer. Please contact the SYC Training Officer who'll be very happy to help if you have any queries.
We also offer informal training to members through our Sailing Clinic which runs throughout the year. This is available for anyone wanting to try a new branch of sailing, to gain confidence or to tidy up or develop a particular skill. Informal training opportunities are available in dinghy sailing (up to RYA Level 3 skills), multihull sailing and yacht cruising.
The Clinic is very flexible and you will be matched with a very experienced member or instructor who can help you with your needs. All you need to do to get things rolling is to contact the relevant Sailing Clinic co-ordinator below:
Open access and safeguarding
Our training is open to all SYC members and we do everything possible to help everyone participate regardless of their background, physical or learning ability.
We have safeguarding arrangements in place for children and vulnerable adults so there’s always an independent person to talk to confidentially about any concerns. Details of the SYC Safeguarding Team can be found on posters in the clubhouse, Members’ Room and changing rooms.
