Open access and safeguarding
All our courses are open to all SYC members. We operate an open access policy. This means that we welcome participation in our courses regardless of your background, physical and learning ability. We do all we can to adapt our courses to the specific needs of participants.
When you apply for a course you will be asked to complete a confidential health and learning needs form. You can use this to tell us about any specific needs you may have to help us facilitate your learning.
We have safeguarding arrangements in place for children and vulnerable adults so there’s always an independent person to speak to confidentially about any concerns. Any concerns or suspicions and allegations of inappropriate behaviour should be reported confidentially to a member of the SYC Safeguarding Team. Details of the SYC Safeguarding Team, including photos, can be found on posters in the clubhouse, members’ room and changing rooms.
You can read the full SYC Safeguarding and Equality Statement here.
Please contact the course organiser or SYC Training Officer if you have any questions or are unsure about the suitability of a course for you.
We reserve the right to alter the Training Calendar.
The courses we offer are based on the demand from members, availability of instructors and training boats and suitable tidal conditions. Many courses require a minimum number of students to be viable and a maximum number to meet student-instructor ratios specified by the RYA. This information is shown in the Training Calendar.
You can add your name to a waiting list if a course is arranged according to demand, fully booked or shown as provisional by contacting the relevant course organiser.
Keep an eye out for updates to the Training Calendar. If you can’t see what you need, please contact the SYC Training Officer.
Class and other activity-based training
Other training may be available during the year. This is normally organised by Class Captains and other activity co-ordinators. Please speak to your Class Captain or activity organiser if there‘s something specific you’d like organised.
Dinghy Sailing Clinic
We're trialling a Dinghy Sailing Clinic during 2017 which will run on Friday evenings between May and mid-July. These informal sessions will be delivered by instructors or experienced members and are intended for relatively new or rusty sailors to build confidence and brush up on specific skills.
Places are subject to availability. If you’d like to book a session, please contact the SYC Training Officer to discuss your specific needs.
It’s sometimes possible to arrange one-to-one training with a qualified instructor or experienced member at other times subject to availability. If you have a specific need for training on a one-to-one basis, please contact the SYC Training Officer.
Non-members are welcome to join some courses at SYC if spare places are available. These courses are shown in the Training Calendar with a separate fee which includes temporary club membership for the duration of the course.
