We’re always looking for volunteers to help with training. There are many roles where we need help whether it’s launching and recovering boats, providing safety cover or teaching.
There are several different types of volunteer we need:

- Assistant Instructor
As an Assistant Instructor (AI) you would assist with teaching under supervision of a RYA Senior Instructor. An AI understands the RYA teaching method, offer general help and helm dinghies with students on board. Assistant Instructors are trained by a RYA Senior Instructor and appointed by the RYA Training Centre Principal to work at SYC only.

The DI course covers a wide range of topics from the RYA Method to teaching different age groups and abilities in a variety of situations. This is a nationally and internationally transferable qualification with further endorsements available for teaching multihulls, keelboats and racing for beginners.
- RYA Advanced Dinghy Instructor
A RYA Advanced Dinghy Instructor (ADI) is a DI trained to deliver performance sailing courses including spinnaker and trapeze skills.
- RYA Senior Instructor
A RYA Senior Instructor (SI) is qualified to organise and control group sailing tuition and to supervise and assist instructors. A SI has undergone formal training and assessment by at least two independent RYA Coach/Assessors.
- RYA Race Coach Level 2
A RYA Level 2 Racing Coach is a good club racer with personal knowledge of club and/or regional racing and a broad basis of coaching skills. They are able to deliver and award RYA Start, Intermediate and Advanced Racing courses where appropriate, working at RYA affiliated clubs or training centres.

A RYA Powerboat Instructor (PBI) is a competent, experienced powerboat driver who has been trained to teach up to Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Powerboat Chief Instructor. A PBI can also teach the RYA Safety Boat course if they hold the RYA Safety Boat certificate.
We’re also interested in British Canoeing and British Stand-Up Paddle Association (BSUPA) qualified instructors to support our kayak and canoe section.
If you’re interested in helping with training at SYC please contact the SYC Training Officer to discuss the options, including opportunities to train as an instructor and revalidate lapsed qualifications.
