Driving of Safety Boats was created by Kathy Jones
The driving of Club ribs by persons under the age of 18 who hold the RYA Powerboat Handling Level 2 Qualification has been raised with the Club insurers.

Many of such drivers have done the training and achieved the qualification through the SYC RYA Training Centre and are thus known to the Club.  Most have done this as a prelude to taking the Dinghy Instructor Course.

The answer received from our insurers is as follows;
They are happy to confirm that the Gallaghers RYA policy permits use of Club RIBs for safety duties from age 16 upwards on the strict understanding that;
All persons aged 16-18 are PB2 qualified
All persons aged 16-18 are accompanied by a suitably competent and/or qualified adult (PB2)aged 18 and above at all times .

The current pro active risk management measures currently implemented by the Club through the Safety Boat Manager such as monitoring skiils/handling is very much endorsed by the insurers and they are all prudent steps to reduce risks.

I trust this clarifies the position.
